Start With the Existing Finish
The texture is assessed before the method is chosen. A hard painted finish should not be treated as though it will release like porous material.
Painted Texture Changes the Decision
After removal, cracks and joints need to be evaluated on the exposed surface. Any active moisture problem should be repaired at its source first.

Repairing the Exposed Ceiling
A smooth finish may require isolated compound work or a broader skim coat. The starting condition decides the extent—not a fixed recipe.
The finishing scope may include ceiling repair, skim coating, sanding, primer and paint. Not every ceiling needs every stage.
What Affects the Estimate?
Area is one factor, but it does not describe the whole job. Height, access, number of rooms, furniture protection, coating, substrate damage and the finish required all contribute to the scope.
The popcorn ceiling cost guide explains why two ceilings with similar dimensions can require very different preparation.
